Barbican Centre, London EC2Y 8DS
Do Something Different Weekend
A lot of people still see the Barbican Arts Centre as something of an unwelcoming, elitist, ugly brutalist mass of concrete that’s near impossible to navigate, let alone find, lacking in soul and in the middle of nowhere. Well, it’s definitely brutalist anyway. But as our image shows, it’s certainly not elitist (although admittedly this sort of thing doesn’t happen every day).
This is one of the centre’s regular half-term extravaganzas in which all sorts of (free) activities are dotted around the numerous open spaces and levels for children and families to interact and get creative with.
Propping up the bar here are Les Grooms (or the ‘Bellboys’ for the Francophobes among you), whose very raison d’etre – or ‘Reason to Be’ [sorry] is to mix in with an generally unsuspecting audience and cause havoc.
