Great London Rideout 2008
An early Sunday morning in Regent’s Park in late spring – there’s nothing quite like it: the gardens are resplendent with flowers reaching full bloom, the lake is alive with young ducklings and other wildfowl, and, if you time it right, you may be lucky enough to hear the gentle sound of hundreds of vintage scooters revving up, about to embark on their annual spring migration to the warmer climes of Southend-on-Sea.
For today is the 12th Great London Rideout – one of a number of annual get-togethers for classic scooter aficionados and enthusiasts of all things Mod. Hundreds come from all over the South East to congregate by the Inner Circle of the Park before heading down to the Marylebone Road and on towards farthest Essex. Many of those on display here are original sixties models that have somehow lasted the test of time & still seem capable of tackling the long haul to the seaside. Some of the scooters are quite old as well (boom-tish!).
Although the days of pitched battles on the beaches with rival rocker gangs are long gone, there’s still plenty of enthusiasm amongst Mods – of all generations – to don the Parka, polish up the two-dozen mirrors & lamps, leap onto the Vespa/Lambretta and head for the coast. With the appropriate soundtrack, of course.
