Old Spitalfields Market, Brushfield St, London E1 6AA
Old Spitalfields Paw Pageant
August Bank Holiday Monday, and if you’re not stuck in a traffic jam heading back from Cornwall, the only place to be is Notting Hill isn’t it? (unless it’s lashing it down of course. But even then…) Well, for a mere 6 million or so of the rest of us Londoners, that’s not always such a big draw. So what else is there to tempt us away from the garden?
Well, for animal lovers Spitalfields Market is putting on a bit of a dog show. The Paw Pageant is a very different beast (I know…) from the show held here back in 2001, but then so is the market. Of course Peckham got here first, but there are so more bijou retail opportunities here…
If you’re more into sporty things, there’s the annual Gay Sports Day in Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. Lots of good clean decadent fun all in a good cause and covered in lots more detail in a previous post.
Taking yourself along the river back towards the South Bank, which, let’s be honest, is not the quiet haven of tranquility it used to be, you’re bound to be enthralled by the many highly skilled practitioners at the art of doing not very much in a cheaply made costume. On the other hand, what’s not to love about bubbles?
Then finally you can end up at the Royal Festival Hall, where there’s always something going on, usually free and quite often involving dancing – on this particular day, of the ballroom variety, with music provided by the ever reliable Ross Mitchell Band, so you probably might get the opportunity to strut your stuff to this.
