30th August 2009
Royal Festival Hall Terrace, London SE1 8XX
What might not be obvious from the main picture is the fact that (barring one somewhat obvious exception) these energetic young folk have been taking part in a carefully rehearsed piece of dance choreography. ‘Ah yes,’ you may think, ‘they’ve all got those Big Dance t-shirts on – so this is another one of those, then?’
Well, yes and no. Big Dance was a biennial event that took place between 2006 and 2016 [& it’s not surprising the dancing stopped then…] and this, you may have noticed, is 2009. Maybe all these participants needed something to prevent them from turning into useless blimps before the next one came along. Or maybe they just all love dancing so much they just couldn’t wait. Fine – we’ll go with the latter suggestion.
Organised and choreographed by Kate Prince of the fantastic ZooNation as a sort of warm-up for the 2010 festival, this DanceMob at the Southbank [doesn’t anybody ever separate words properly anymore?] encouraged young and old alike to take part, and filled up both the Festival Hall Riverside Terrace and the riverside walkway with eager bouncing groovers.
And if that wasn’t enough, down on the foreshore – and completely coincidentally – there’re yet more groovy types having a bit of a rave on the beach whilst the tide’s out.
