Streatham Common, London SW16 3PX
Streatham Kite Day
Well, it had to happen eventually: thanks to the ridiculous state of affairs with housing and property in London, the young, talented and (not even particularly) skint find themselves gravitating towards the less attractive neighbourhoods to find somewhere affordable to exist, and then by their mere presence, the place pretty quickly becomes, well, more attractive. Even Streatham (or St Reatham, if you’re being extremely witty). Once a quiet little hamlet you pass through on the way out of London, now the go-to place for people priced out of Brixton and Clapham.
Ok, it’s nowhere near the peak trendiness of Peckham or [insert latest Time Out Happening Suburb name here], but it does have an ice rink and classic cinema… and the longest continuous high street in the UK (well, that may appeal to some people). Even Jo Brand has started saying nice things about it. It has arts & food festivals amongst the usual attractions, and it also annually hosts a kite festival.
This has been taking place on the much appreciated Streatham Common since 1998, and though it might not quite reach the heights (see what I did there?) of Ahmedabad or Weifang, it’s still a popular day out for the locals, with demonstration teams and guest international flyers. So, it’s over to you Mr Tomlinson…
