Streatham Kite Festival
Now today’s image could be seen as a metaphor for life: you’re constantly running yourself into the ground just to keep things afloat, and the moment you stop, it all collapses around you. Without extra energy from elsewhere, you’re unlikely to ever get your dream off the ground. Profound, eh? Oh well…
So anyway, here we are back again in fashionable Streatham and its really rather lovely Common for their annual Kite Festival. Enabling such an event so early in the spring is always going to be something of a risk, weatherwise [as evidenced in 2013], but it’s fine enough today for the hundreds of visitors to participate in one of the most universal of pastimes, or relax & watch the demonstrations, though we sadly don’t get anything quite as big as this or as long as this, but at least nobody’s getting carried away.
Earlier today we’re up at the south Bank where local stunt bike enthusiasts are honing their skills at one of their favourite pitches in the Shell Centre complex, which, nobody will be surprised to learn, is now being developed into luxury flats, with the loss of some iconic post-war architecture and no provision for local housing needs, and of course all the objections fell on deaf ears.
Anyway, back to Streatham and here’s a charming little ditty featuring the famous local Odeon.
