Taxi charity children’s outing
I know, it’s quite a shock when you discover one of your heroes failing to live up to their reputation and behaving in a scandalously inappropriate manner. Yes, Shrek is seen here actually queuing for the toilet (admittedly it’s a portaloo, and if it’s anything like the state we found the toilets in at last year’s Bermondsey Street Festival it’s probably not inappropriate at all. Anyway, I digress…).
Our cuddly ogre with the dodgy Scottish accent is here at Victoria Park in Hackney gazing back at a line of 100 London Black Cabs (no, this isn’t another Uber protest) all decked out with balloons for a trip to the seaside. Shrek himself isn’t driving one, sadly (and it’s not true that he failed The Knowledge because he wasn’t grumpy enough – that’s just slander…) – he’s got other work to get back to anyway.
This is, in fact, the annual London Taxi Drivers Fund For Underprivileged Children’s day trip to Southend. The charity has been around organising events and excursions for youngsters since 1928 – there’s a video from a more recent gathering here, all you need to know about the Knowledge here, and some appropriate music here, of course. This is quite clever, too. I don’t think these are budding cabbies, however…
