Waterloo may be the busiest station in the UK, but it seems most of its tens of thousands of daily ‘customers’ are totally oblivious to the charms of Lower Marsh nestling close to the southern edge of the terminus, despite continuous efforts by local business organisations to give this quirky little street the attention it deserves.
What was once a bustling street market stretching from Westminster Bridge Road to Blackfriars Road has in recent years dwindled to a few stalls, most of which now provide street food for lunchtime office workers. However, there are still plenty of independent shops and cafes to make the street worth a detour. Giving the street the sort of makeover to even come close to matching the popularity of Borough Market up the road has so far proved frustratingly difficult.
What it does have, however, is a carnival.
And each summer since 2003 Waterloo Carnival has brought a splash of colour and music to the local streets, giving an opportunity for young and old alike to dress up for a themed procession to the local oasis that is Millennium Green.
Needless to say, we’re not picking the obvious song to celebrate the locality, especially as this one has shots of Lower Marsh in its promo vid.
